The dreaded Saturday Eagles pick

We interrupt Red October for this breaking news bulletin.

Anyone remember the Eagles? Anyone remember the Kevin Kolb Era? Both will be back on display for a national TV audience Sunday night in San Francisco.

With Michael Vick sidelined with a rib injury, it will be Kolb's second chance to take command of the Eagles' offense. Coach Andy Reid has indicated that Vick will be his starting quarterback as soon as his rib is healed. But I  seem to remember him saying pretty much the same thing about Kolb a few weeks ago. How'd that work out?

For some reason, I see Kolb playing well Sunday night. If you look back at last week's debacle agianst the 'Skins, Kolb actually ran the offense pretty well. No, he didn't throw the ball down the field. But why should he when Washington was taking that away? All he likely would have done is throw interceptions. Instead, Kolb went about running the West Coast offense in an efficient way.

I think he keeps doing it Sunday night.

There is almost nothing as dangerous in the NFL as a truly desperate team. And that is what the Birds will be facing against an 0-4 team that could be whipped into a lather by head coach Mike Singletary. Flying all the way across the country won't help, either. But I think Kolb and the Birds get the job done.

And if Kolb is lights out in the City by the Bay, do we have another quarterback controversy?

Make it Eagles 24, 49ers 13. OK, enough about the Birds. We now take you back to "Doc-Toberfest."

Last Week: I did not see the Birds coming up quite that lame - and that flat - in a very big game with the return of Donovan McNabb. I suppose I should not be surprised by Andy Reid's inability to manage, time, amke critical deicsions or have his team ready to play in a big game. I also believe it's about time to start the Sean McDermott watch. This defense simply is not good enough, and has guys consistently out of position.

Season Record: I am still a solid 3-1 after that hiccup in the Redskins game. That still makes me one game game better than the Birds, who sit at a thoroughly mediocre 2-2. Anyone else think that .500 level of play just might wind up in an 8-8 team?
