4th and 26

You cannot think of an Eagles-Packers playoff game without thinking about it.

At least I can’t.

Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004. The Eagles and Donovan McNabb seemingly in an impossible situation, about to lose to the Packers on their own frozen tundra of Lincoln Financial Field.

The Eagles were down to desperate measures. They needed a miracle.

Actually, what they got will forever be remembered simply as “fourth and 26.”

McNabb, harried in the pocket, scrambled around before heaving a ball downfield, which was reeled in by the one and only Freddie Mitchell. A legend was born. David Akers kicked a field goal to propel the Eagles to their third straight NFC title game.

I’m hoping the Birds won’t need such theatrics to put away the Pack Sunday afternoon. But I can’t tell you I won’t be thinking about that play. Especially if the Eagles are down late in the game, down to an impossible situation on fourth down.

How about a Michael Vick scramble up the middle for 32?

We’ve already had a repeat of the Miracle at the Meadowlands this year.

Maybe it’s time for 4th and 26, the Sequel.
