Oswalt simmers

Roy Oswalt did not sound like a happy camper after getting an early hook in Wednesday’s disappointing 2-1 Phils’ loss to the lowly Nationals. The Phils dropped two of three in the sauna-like confines of the nation’s capital. After the game, Oswalt sounded like he was still simmering just a bit.

Asked after the game about being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the top of the sixth, Oswalt did something of a slow burn, and it wasn’t just from the simmering temperatures in the mid-90s that turned Nationals Park into an oven.

“That’s their decision,” Oswalt said of manager Charlie Manuel’s decision. “He’s the manager of the team. I don’t question much of that, but that’s the first time I’ve been taken out at 79 pitches. We’ll see how it goes next time.”

Oswalt is coming back from his most recent bout with back problems.

Probably not helping his mood was the fact that pinch-hitter appeared to put vault the Phils into the lead when he laced a ball into the gap with the bases loaded. But Nats left fielder Laynce Nix made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning – and light Oswalt’s fuse.

Here’s an interesting question: Do you think Manuel would have done the same thing had that been Roy Halladay on the mound?

Just asking.
