A tough day - and night - in Chester

It might be the single question I get asked more than any other.

"How come there is never any good news in the paper?"

Nowhere does this come into play more than in the city of Chester.

I guess I might be hearing that again today.

It was not a good day in Chester yesterday.

The day started with word of still another fire in a single block on Bickley Place. So far authorities are only labeling the fires - three in four days - as 'suspicious.'

Residents are worried, and rightfully so. Police are now stationed in the area, doing around-the-clock surveillance as the investigation continues.

Last night things turned deadly in the city. First a man suspected of robbing a bank and then fleeing on a bicycle was killed in a collision with a city police car.

Then a few hours later, a horrific accident took place on Route 291 (Second Street) at Pusey Street.

Grim stuff.

But all three are stories that we need to report. That does not mean we ignore the good things that happen in Chester. For instance, a group of women will lead a contingent from the city in buses to Washington, D.C., this weekend to take part in a massive anti-violence rally.

We plan to cover that as well.
