Guiney new leader of Delco Dems

There's a new sheriff in town for Delco Democrats.

The party faithful met Sunday and elected Swarthmore's Colleen Guiney as the new party chairman, succeeding David Landau.

The move comes after a challenge to Landau, who has been party boss since 2010, in the form of one-time candidate and labor leader John Kane.

Instead the two men put out a joint statement backing Guiney for the post.

It did not take long for Delco Republicans to go into attack mode.

They put out a statement Sunday knocking Guiney for her role in circulating petitions for a third party Congressional candidate in 2010. That's when they say Guiney circulated petitions for Jim Schneller in the hopes that he would draw votes away from Pat Meehan in his race against Democrat Bryan Lentz in the 7th District Congressional race.

Schneller, a "birther" who questioned President Barack Obama's citizenship, was seen as a way of splitting the conservative vote.

Meehan ended up defeating Lentz anyhow.
