The horrific aftermath of a DUI crash

The reverberations from the fatal crash in Upper Chichester Saturday night the took the life of Deana Eckman continue to resound across Delco.

Today her mother talks about the devastating loss the family is still trying to wrap their arms around. It is every parent's worst nightmare.

Our front page recaps a mother's agony, with Roseann DeRosa's own words: "My heart will never heal."

Meanwhile, on our editorial page, we focus on another question that has been asked repeatedly since the crash Saturday night and arrest of David Strowhouer. It marked his sixth arrest on driving under the influence charges.

People want to know why this Willistown resident was still free and still managed to get behind the wheel.

Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun Copeland noted that Strowhouer did jail time after each violation, and actually was out on parole at the time of Saturday night's accident.

But he is looking at some serious prison time if convicted in this latest incident.

That is because of a change in state law that beefs up penalties for repeat DUI drivers.

Strowhouer could be looking at a mandatory seven years behind bars.

That's a good thing.

Because if there is one thing we now realize, it is that suspending a person's license does not prevent them from getting behind the wheel, even when they are impaired.

Strowhouer was driving with a suspended license Saturday night.

That decision cost Deana Eckman her life, and seriously injured her husband.
