A heated day in the Clifton-Upper Darby schools turf war

The heat is definitely getting turned up on the dispute between Clifton Heights and the Upper Darby School District.

Early yesterday an item posted on the school website showed an agenda item for last night's meeting indicating the board might be voting on a move to terminate the lease with the borough for the athletic fields on Springfield Road.

That's where the school district wants to build a new middle school, a plan that has raised the hackles of Clifton Heights residents, who are bitterly complaining about the possible loss of their town's only green space, and their beloved fields considered "sacred ground" by man in the borough.

After that news hit the DelcoTimes.com website, and kicked off furious reactions on the Save Clifton Green Space Facebook page, the item was pulled from last night's meeting.

Instead there was more discussion on the plan, including a review of the lease agreements several youth organizations have with the school district.

Clifton Mayor Joe Lombardo was furious about the initial move to terminate the lease. He fired off an angry letter. You can get all the details from last night's meeting here.

And on our editorial page, we again visit the two sides to this story.
