Philly sports in crisis? Relax, it's Masters weekend

The Phillies have now lost two straight - adding an exclamation point Wednesday night by getting spanked by the Nats, 15-1. Yes, that was Aaron Altherr pitching at one point in the rout.

It comes one night after a heart-breaking come-from-ahead loss - blowing a 6-1 lead with Aaron Nola on the mount in the process. Yes, there are questions about the Phillies, in particular if they have enough pitching.

And there are questions about Joel Embiid as well. Sixers General Manager put a match to the pre-playoff bonfire before last night's regular season finale by saying Embiid was not "definite" for the playoff opener Saturday.

So, yes, there is upheaval in the Philly sports world.

And I could care less.

Because for the next four days there is only one sports event.

It is Masters weekend.

Go ahead, snicker if you will.

I could care less.

The best sports event of the year starts today at Augusta National in Georgia.

I suppose it helps to be a golf nut. I certainly qualify.

I'm also a huge Tiger Woods fan. And there is great hope that Tiger will be on the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.

All the tradition and piousness connected to The Masters has its critics.

Don't count me among them.

Year after year, it provides some of the best theater in sports.

And that is especially true if Tiger is in the hunt come Sunday afternoon.

This is pretty simple. On most Sunday afternoons, for most people golf is just golf.

But when Tiger is on the leaderboard on Sunday afternoon, golf becomes something more - it's an event, let alone must-watch TV. Don't believe it? Go to YouTube and search for "Tiger Woods chip in at the Masters."

"In your life did you ever see anything like that!"

That's what this weekend is all about.

See you Sunday afternoon, Tiger
