So much for the A.J. Feeley era.
Feeley, everybody’s darling after almost leading the Eagles to the upset win of the year last week in New England despite throwing three interceptions, reverted to form at a wet, cold, miserable Lincoln Financial Field Sunday as the Eagles lost to the Seahawks, 28-24.
Feeley seemed to have found a new favorite receiver. The problem is that he was wearing a Seahawks jersey. Seattle linebacker Lofa Tatupu seemed to be reading Feeley’s mind as he picked off three passes that were seemingly thrown right at him, including a dagger in the heart the finished the Eagles off after a thrilling punt return by Brian Westbrook put a dramatic come-from-behind win within reach.
But Feeley had an accomplice in this mess. And you can take that literally.
Conditions at the Linc were brutal, with a constant icy rain falling all day. The new turf was slick, the balls were even slicker and footing was treacherous.
Despite this Andy Reid, with a backup quarterback at the helm, decided to once again show off his offensive genius, throwing the ball 42 times. That’s the same number they threw the week before against the Patriots.
Last week Feeley completed 27 passes. Yesterday he connected only on 19. Of course, he did hook up with Seahawk defenders four times, including the very first offensive play of the day for the Eagles, which he deposited right into Tatupu’s arms. Two early picks put the Eagles in a hole right from the outset.
The Eagles best offensive weapon is Westbrook. He is a threat every time he touches the ball. Reid gets credit for putting him back on that punt late in the fourth quarter. Westbrook almost salvaged another season, much as he did a couple of years ago with a gave-saving return against the Giants.
But Westbrook got forced out at the 14. He didn’t see the ball again. Unbelievable.
Feeley threw the ball 42 times. He handed it off to his best offensive weapon just 21 times.
The guess here is that Donovan McNabb likely will be back behind center this week when the Eagles line up against the Giants. Not sure it will make much difference.
If fans have learned one thing with this team, it’s that to “air” is Andy Reid.
Turns out to err is, too.
