Ring in the new

In the words of Michael Nutter, it’s a new day, and a new way.

And it’s not just in Philadelphia where new is the buzz word of the day.

Yes, Nutter this morning will take the oath, and begin sweeping away the vestiges of the scandal-ridden Street Administration. Nutter has made it clear that a priority for his administration will be to rid City Hall of the stench of “pay-to-play” that hounded John Street and several of his top aides and confidantes.

But take a look around. There are new things busting out all over.

Here in Delco, three new members of Delaware County Council will take the oath this morning.

Council Chairman Andy Reilly will leave the courthouse and return to his private law practice. Mike Puppio decided not to seek another term. Mary Alice Brennan is now a county judge.

In their place will be three new Republicans, Haverford Commissioner Andy Lewis, Springfield Commissioner Tom McGarrigle and Middletown Commissioner Christine Fizzano-Cannon.

That’s correct, three Republicans. While Democrats have made some clear advances in recent years, they have yet to crack the GOP stranglehold on the courthouse.

David Landau pounded the pavement for months ranting about his “Case Against the Courthouse.” Didn’t matter. He and his two running mates were vanquished. As were the two candidates seeking seats on the Court of Common Pleas. Brennan and longtime Magisterial District Judge Greg Mallon donned their new robes on Friday.

And finally, it’s a new day in presidential politics as well. There are two new front-runners heading into Tuesday night’s crucial New Hampshire primary, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee.

Amazingly, the twosome who had been leading their respective party’s packs are now on the ropes. Some pundits are now saying Republican Mitt Romey and Democrat Hillary Clinton must win in New Hampshire or face the possibility of being out of the race.

Incredible.

One other “new” thing to look for back here in Delco. As is the norm, most municipalities will reorganize tonight.

We hear there is going to be a doozy in Ridley Park, where Democrats have grabbed control of borough council and are in the process of “reorganizing” the positions of manager, solicitor and other plum jobs.

More on that one tomorrow.
