Defining a hero

We sometimes throw the word “hero” around pretty loosely in the newspaper business.

Not in the case of Eddie Lane.

Webster’s defines a hero as “a man of great courage and nobility.”

Kind of defines what Lane did Sunday night.

Lane received a phone call from friends telling him his house was on fire. A bit earlier he had dropped off his girlfriend and her daughter at the house.

He quickly went to the scene, only to see the house in flames. He never hesitated. Lane literally kicked in the front door and burst inside in a doomed effort to rescue Shanae Bailey and little Anaija Bailey.

None of them made it out alive.

Yesterday, his brother described what Eddie Lane as a “hero, a superhero.”

He’ll get no argument from us.

A memorial fund has been set up for the family. Donations can be made to the Edward Charles Swain-Lane Memorial Fund, c/0 Sun East Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 2231, 4500 Pennell Road, Aston, PA 19014.
