Age-old question on McNabb

Donovan McNabb wants us to believe he is now a member of the Washington Redskins because the Eagles believed he was too old to be effective.

I’m not buying.

Make no mistake, something was old, but it wasn’t necessarily McNabb’s age. It was his act.

The goofy faces, the smiling after another missed opportunity, throwing long or high or wide of a wide-open receiver.

Dononvan’s age is not why he is not returning for a 12th year year as Eagles’ QB. It is because of what did not happen in the previous 11 years.

McNabb had a great run with the Birds, turning them into a perennial contender and into five NFC championship games.

The problem was he only won one of them, and followed that up with a loss in the ultimate goal, the Super Bowl.

Perhaps team President Joe Banner said it best, standing in the Eagles locker room after that demoralizing loss in the Arizona desert.

He described insanity as doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.

That is why Donovan McNabb is not coming back. The Eagles already committed to Andy Reid by giving him a contract extension. Even a team as arrogant as the Eagles, you know, those “gold standard” folks, could possibly come back with the same tandem of Reid and McNabb and sell that to their rabid fan base.

There are other things to quibble about with McNabb. His statement that he’s not going to treat the two games against the Eagles next year any differently than any other opponent?

Please.

Then again, it’s that façade, the smirk, the lack of passion, the absence of fire, that turned off so many people in Philly.

I wish McNabb the best in D.C.

I just wish he would be honest for a change. If he would just spill his guts, you could almost stomach the rest of his act.

He never did that there.

Make no mistake. Donovan McNabb is an Eagle for the ages.

But his belief that his age is the reason he is no longer here could not be more off the mark.

Just like so many of his passes.
