Hat trick for Philly fans

It was a hat trick for Philly sports fans last night.

First the Phillies. Somebody break them up. Or get a hose and put them out. That’s how hot they are – especially their bats. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they’ve now played five of their eight games against the Nationals.

They started the day on a downer, with star shortstop Jimmy Rollins going on the 15-day DL with a painful calf strain. No problem.

Then they watched as starter Kyle Kendrick imploded for the second straight outing, going less than two innings while struggling with his control and giving up six runs. You have to wonder if Kendrick is ever going to make it in the majors.

Even that couldn’t stop the Phils’ juggernaut. They erased a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with four of their own. Kendrick promptly gave up three more, which the Phils matched.

The Phils went on to pound the Nats, 14-7. Chase Utley hit two dingers.

Shane Victorino, moved into the leadoff spot to replace Rollins, looks like he likes his new surroundings. He went 4-for-5 and drove in five runs.

Now if only they could schedule 162 games against the Nationals.

Secondly, there were your Flyers.

It took Brian Boucher 10 years, but he finally got his revenge against the Devils and Martin Brodeur.

Boucher outdueled the future Hall of Famer to lead the Flyers to a 2-1 win and a 1-0 lead in their opening Stanley Cup playoff series.

And finally, the Sixers season came to a merciful end last night. With another loss, of course.

It appears Eddie Jordan will be fired as early as today. The only question at this point is if Ed Stefanski, the Drexel Hill native, will be sent packing with him.

In the meantime, the Phils get their National League champion rings today.

Then they’ll look to ring in another win agaisnt the Nats, while the Flyers ring in their 6-1 record this year vs. the Devils, and the Sixers ring out Eddie Jordan.
