A seismic day in Philly sports

A seismic day in Philly sports

There were two big stories in Philadelphia sports yesterday. Ironically, both of them involved Washington, D.C.

The Phillies were in the nation’s capital for the season opener. Things went pretty well.

How about this for a promotional theme for the 2010 Phils: As Advertised.

The defending two-time National League champs were every bit as good as advertised as they dismantled the Nationals, 11-1.

And here’s the key: Their two big off-seasson additions fueled the rout.
Roy Halladay went seven innings and struck out nine. Here’s the scary
part: Halladay wasn’t all that sharp. He struggled in the first inning before settling down and then methodically mowing down the Nats.

As for Polanco, whose clubhouse nickname is “Polly?”

Polly want a cracker? Maybe to get with that salami he hit. That’s right. Polanco hit a grand slam and drove in six runs for the Phils.

Ryan Howard also hit a dinger just for old-time sake and make things feel normal.

My preseason prediction for the Phils was 96 wins and a third NL East crown. I might have been low.

The other big D.C. story was their football team, specifically their new quarterback.

Donovan McNabb landed in the nation’s capital and will be introduced at a noon press conference.

Yesterday Kevin Kolb talked about being anointed the new Eagles starting QB.

In the meantime, sports fans debated the Richter scale shift involving the Birds.

During the day I found myself wondering what would be better? The Redskins at the Linc for the first Monday night game of the year, or both teams colliding a little later on when they’re both 3-0.

Either way, it will make the circus surrounding last year’s debut of Michael Vick look like a dog and pony show, if you’ll excuse the pun.

McNabb’s return to Philly will be one of those seismic occurrences.

In the meantime, we’ll wait to see what he has to say this afternoon.

How long ‘til you think it gets brought up that he was booed at the NFL Draft when the Eagles made him the No. 2 pick?
