Sestak surges in poll

Don't start throwing dirt on the Sestak campaign just yet.

The upstart Dem congressman has not had a lot of good news - especially when it comes to the polls - in his bid to spit in the eye of his own party leaders and dump longtime Sen. Arlen Specter.

That is changing a bit today.

A new Rasmussen poll shows Sestak seriously closing the gap on the party-switching Specter. Where he had been down double digits in many polls, a Rasmussen poll released today has the race almost as a dead heat.

Rasmussen has it 44-42 for Specter. That's a big change from the numbers the same poll found in March, when it was 48-37 for Specter, and February, when Specter had an even bigger 51-36 percent edge.

Sestak's biggest challenge in this uphill battle is the fact that outside of the 7th District - which is essentially Delaware County with a couple slivers of Chesco and Montco throw in - nobody knew who he was. He has some visibility in Philadelphia, but he has visited every county in the state and seemingly was going nowhere fast.

That may be changing.

Sestak has always said not to worry about the polls, especially his numbers in them. Instead, he focused on the unfavorable ratings for his opponent.

And he has yet to spend any of the $5 million war chest he is expected to use to blanket the state with a carpet-bombing series of TV ads.

The primary is still a month away.

This one could turn into a barn burner. Probably not exactly what Democratic leaders want as they look ahead to a fall general election and what promises to be a bruising - and expensive - battle against former congressman Pat Toomey.

No one thought Joe Sestak was going to unseat Curt Weldon four years ago. He had a little help with a federal probe, one that has yet to turn up any charges against Weldon or his close allies who were targeted in a series of high-profile FBI raids.

Now it looks like Sestak might be looking to do the improbable again.

That groan you just heard is from the Specter camp. This one ain't over. Not by a long shot.
