So far the Phillies look great when they have a big lead. They were 2-0 in crushing the lowly Washington Nationals in two straight games to open the season.
Last night was a different animal. And it brought up an old malady.
The Phils dropped a 6-5 decision to the Nats. But they had every chance to win the game.
After getting a rocky start from Kyle Kendrick, who got touched for five runs in four innings and now sports a healthy 11.25 ERA, the Phils used their offense to scratch back into the game and tie it.
That’s when the old problem surfaced again – clutch hitting with runners in scoring position.
After the Nats took a 6-5 lead on a bloop double, the Phils still had every chance to tie or win in both the eighth and ninth innings.
They got a runner to third in both innings, but they could not come up with a key hit. Even red-hot Placido Polanco failed to deliver.
Hey, you’re not going to win them all. The Phils are 2-1 and headed to Houston for the weekend.
But keep an eye on how they do in these close games when they aren’t bludgeoning opponents into submission.
