100 and going strong

It is, without question, one of my favorite stories of the year.

The county gets this one right. When someone turns 100, they deserve a party.

Yesterday, they got one at the Drexelbrook.

Of the 550,000 residents in Delaware County, 120 can be listed as centenarians. Forty-seven of them were honored by more than 200 people gathered for the annual luncheon to salute our “seasoned” citizens, including many who will be turning 100 this year, as well as family and friends.

I’m always interested in any words of wisdom these folks can offer, especially the secret to a long life.

“I enjoy life,” said Alva Mullikin. “I don’t let things get me down.”

Also in attendance was Marguerite Woodbury, a sprightly 107.

Joining Mullikin was Katherine Rann. They were teammates on the field hockey team at Upper Darby High School.

Class of 1929.

They lived through the stock market crash later that year. And the Great Depression. And World War II.

They are living history. We would do well to listen closely to them and heed their advice.
