Tiger comes to town

The circus is coming to town.

Not Barnum & Bailey, although this one does feature a tiger. That would be Tiger Woods, who in the not-so-distant past was the best – and most feared - golfer on the planet.

I’m not sure what to make of Tiger Woods these days, although circus pretty much covers it.

Woods will be at Aronimink Country Club out in Newtown Square this afternoon for media day for the AT&T National Tournament, which benefits his foundation.

In addition to sitting down with the local media, Tiger also was supposed to do a youth golf clinic. That’s been shelved, however, since Tiger again made headlines yesterday at Players Championship.

Tiger withdrew from the prestigious tournament, sometimes referred to as golf’s “fifth major.” He was complaining about a pain in the neck.
Literally.

This one didn’t have anything to do with a heckling fan, or a funny sign being flown over the course.

Woods pulled the plug on his day complaining about neck pain that he believes might be a bulging disk. It is not known whether or not he will now actually play in the tournament on the July 4 weekend.

One thing is becoming increasingly clear: Tiger Woods’ world – and in fact the golf world – changed back on Thanksgiving night when he careened down his driveway and slammed into a fire hydrant. That of course was followed by months of salacious reports about his numerous marital infidelities.

I have always been a big Tiger Woods fan. But this is not the Tiger Woods I know and admire.

This is someone else altogether. Woods has not come close to being the dominating player he was before his fall from grace. Maybe he’ll eventually regain that lofty status. But it’s clear something has changed.

This is no longer a Tiger. It’s a kitty cat, one who seems all too human, both on and off the course.

We’ll let you know what Tiger has to say out at Aronimink today.

My guess is it won’t be a roar. It will be more of a purr, like so much of what was once the greatest golfer on the planet.
