'Dirty Charlie' rips Phils

We interrupt this outbreak of Flyers’ Fever (who slew the Blackhawks? It was Claude Giroux) for this moment of Phillies reality.

Charlie Manuel is not a happy camper. And that’s partly because he believes too many members of his slumping Phillies are entirely too chipper with their current play.

Manuel is getting tough with his highly paid, and currently severely under-achieving squad.

Yesterday Manuel ordered clubhouse staff to shut off a pre-game movie after the Phils again did little or nothing to break out of their doldrums in dropping a 2-1 decision to the Braves.

If you’re counting the Phils have now lost 11 of their last 15 games and currently reside two and half games behind the Braves in the National League East.

So Manuel was in no mood for a viewing of the Clint Eastwood gem, “Gran Torino.”

Instead Manuel went “Dirty Harry” on his team. He believes they’ve lost their focus. Shane Victorino isn’t so sure.

“It’s just a rut we’re in,” Victorino said.

That rut is getting deeper all the time. The Phillies are in uncharted territory when it comes to offensive slumps.

They keep saying all the right things. They keep saying they know they’re a good team, they’ve been there before and they can get right back in it.

Now it’s time to do it.

As Charlie Manuel might say, “Go ahead. Make my day.”
