The loneliest man on the planet is no longer the Maytag Repairman.
It’s Jim Joyce. Here’s why.
Joyce was working first base during last night’s Tigers-Indians game.
Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga was on the verge of becoming the second pitcher in a week to hurl a perfect game.
He did not. Because of one man’s imperfection. That man would be Jim Joyce.
This morning we are not talking about Galarraga throwing the 21st perfect game in Major League history, just days after Phils’ ace Roy Halladay tossed the 20th.
Instead everyone is talking about Joyce.
The 27th batter bounced a ball fielded by the Tigers’ first baseman. He flipped to Galarraga, who clearly appeared to step on the bag before the runner.
Joyce did not see it that way. But thanks to TV and instant replay, millions have now seen that Joyce flat-out missed the call.
After the game, Joyce agreed with them.
He admitted he blew it. And he said it was not especially close.
Before last night I had no idea who Jim Joyce was. This morning I am blogging about him.
I also respect him. He didn’t stonewall, he didn’t blow up at his questioners. He didn’t go prima donna. He simply said he got the call wrong.
Keep instant replay. Yes, I know that without it the Flyers very well might be looking at a 3-0 deficit in their series against the Blackhawks.
I’m still not a fan. The game is played by humans, it can be decided by them.
Even when they get it wrong.
Just ask Jim Joyce.
