The Phillies were perfect this weekend.
Their ace, Roy Halladay, threw a perfect game Saturday against the Marlins. It was just the 20th perfect in Major League Baseball history and the first for a Phillie since Jim Bunning’s classic Father’s Day effort against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium in 1964.
Unfortunately, the Phils’ bats also have been perfect – perfectly inept.
This is no longer a slump; it’s a problem.
The Phils have now dropped out of first place, courtesy of yesterday’s
9-3 loss to the Braves, who leap-frogged them into the top spot in the NL East.
This is how bad it is for the Phils’ bats. Before plating three runs in the seventh Monday, the Phils had been shut out for 21 straight innings.
They’re getting pretty good at this. Remember, they also went 0-for-New York, getting shut out three straight games in Gotham.
The Phils seem to go through one of these skids each year. This one feels different.
One thing is certain. It doesn’t feel good.
The Phils have gotten lucky in that most of the attention has been showered on the Flyers and their uphill quest for the Stanley Cup.
They better hope they snap out of this things soon.
The Flyers will only be playing for another week tops. Then it will be all eyes on the Phillies.
Charlie Manuel and his two-time defending National League champions are about to go under the microscope.
