Someone forget to tell the Phillies that it was the Flyers – not them – who had their season ended Wednesday night.
The Phils got rained out Wednesday night, then decided to take another night off Thursday – at least at the plate.
After posting 10 runs Tuesday night, the Phils climbed back into their offensive shell, wasting a good effort from Roy Halladay and losing to the Marlins, 2-0.
The Phils managed just four hits against Marlins’ ace Josh Johnson, who outdueled Halladay over eight innnings.
You might call it a touche moment. Halladay uncorked a perfect game in Florida a week ago, besting Johnson in a similar matchup.
Halladay wasn’t perfect last night. And he needed to be to win. Actually being perfect only would have gotten him a tie, since the Phils failed to score.
And there was that final, painful sight: Ryan Howard at the plate as the tying run with a runner on third and two out in the bottom of the ninth.
OK, anyone else have the terrible feeling that Howard was going to strike out? Yep, me too.
Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel is known as a guy who does not panic.
That’s one of the reasons players love to go work for him. But that does not mean he is not concerned.
“I’m concerned every night when we lose,” Manuel said last night. “I think we know that we aren’t scoring runs because we aren’t hitting the ball.”
Pretty simple game, no?
