'Rocky' fights Chester drug problem

‘Rocky’ Brown is about to go Rocky Balboa on Chester’s drug problem.

Yo, Chester, listen up.

The man once known as the ‘Rappin’ Reverend’ and the Republican candidate challenging state Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland for his 159th District state House seat, is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore.

Brown stopped in the office yesterday to remind me that he’s holding a press conference in the city Friday to draw attention to what he believes is a key factor contributing to the city’s drug and violence problem.

Brown will blast businesses that he claims are flouting a city ordinance prohibiting sales of drug paraphernalia. Brown believes it’s time to turn up the heat.

He thinks there’s a direct link between the pervasive drug situation and the city’s latest outbreak of violence.

A man was shot and killed on the 200 block of Patterson Street Tuesday night.

That fatal shooting came after an explosive holiday weekend on city streets. Five people were shot when someone opened fire on a crowd at the Ruth Bennett Homes early Sunday. A few minutes later, gunfire erupted in the 1300 block of Crosby Street.

Brown believes drugs are involved in the violence and he thinks that enforcing the anti-paraphernalia sales ordinance would be a start.

He also warns of still two more menacing developments in the city and region. He’s upset about the sale of powerful, big cans of malt liquor, which are 12 percent alcohol but look kind of like a colorful soda can. He says the cans are being sold to minors.

And he warns of an epidemic of the use of “Wet,” which drug users are dipping their cigarettes in and then smoking. It’s today’s equivalent of Angel Dust. And he believes it’s responsible for a lot of the violent behavior we’re seeing on city streets.

The press conference is at 2:30 outside the New Chester Deli, 58-60 West Ninth Street.
