Fight back in the Phils

Maybe it was all Milt Thompson’s fault.

After another rough road trip, the Phils fired their batting instructor when they got back to town.

They haven’t lost since.

Yes, a big part of the Phils’ problems have been rooted in their offensive problems this year.

But Milt Thompson had nothing to do with the injuries that have hounded the team, nor the lackadaisical play that has been their M.O. for too many games.

The team needed a message. They also needed a scapegoat. Enter Thompson.

Now the Phils are just four and a half back of the Braves, with a host of games left between themselves and Atlanta.

Brad Lidge continues to be walk a tight-rope on seemingly every outing; he’s now managed to walk the bases loaded two straight days, but he sealed the deal both times.

With the trade deadline looming on Saturday, the Phils are still looking to add an arm. Most of the talk continues to center on Astros’ starter Ray Oswalt, and Jayson Werth continues to be the name most mentioned as the bait.

After playing uninspired baseball most of the season, the Phillies just might be ready to prove us all wrong. Maybe you can flip the switch and turn it on.

If they do it, I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong.

I hope I am.
