Heat is on in Eddystone

The simmering dispute in Eddystone over bringing a metal-shredding facility to town is about to heat up again.

Council meets tonight. No doubt they will again be asked about their decision to give preliminary approval to the plan by Camden Iron & Metals to relocate their facility from southwest Philly to the old Foamex plant in the borough.

A group of residents has made no bones about their stance on the issue. They’re against it for a lot of reasons and they have been putting some serious pressure on council to block the move.

So far they have not been successful.

Council meets tonight. Previous meetings concerning the CIM proposal have been moved out of council chambers to a bigger room to handle the expected crowd.

The residents’ group wanted tonight’s meeting moved as well. So far council has decided not to honor their request.

I’m not really sure why. It seems like a legitimate request.

The CIM proposal has created something of a fissure in the small town. Council is admittedly caught in a tough spot here. It appears as if CIM has the right to relocate to the Foamex plant. The zoning laws are already on their side.

At the same time, it’s also clear that a substantial number of people in town do not want this plant in their town. They have some legitimate concerns, including traffic, quality of life, and potential health issues.

The debate will continue tonight.

You would think that council would look to have the largest venue possible to debate this heated issue.

Doesn’t look like that is going to be the case.

We’ll be there to let you know what happens.

One thing seems certain. Regardless of how council finally rules on this issue, a lot of people are going to be unhappy.

Not an easy spot to be in.
