Kids and guns

Kids and guns are never a good combination.

It appears that volatile combination turned deadly again in the city of Chester.

D.A. Mike Green and Chester police held a press conference Wednesday to update the probe into the wild street gun battle between police and suspects on Tuesday that left an officer wounded, one suspect dead, one wounded, and another man shot as well.

Here’s the deal. A 16-year-old is dead, after police say he exited the building and pointed a gun at police. Never a good idea.

Another 16-year-old was wounded. For his troubles, Shaquille Byrd, a basketball player for Chester High, also will be charged with murder in the wild shootout. Andre Morales won’t have that problem. The 16-year-old was killed in the gun battle.

Police believe the teens were looking to rob a group of elderly men playing cards in the building.

If there’s any good news to come out of this it is that wounded Officer Luis Rodriguez was released from the hospital yesterday. He was shot in the arm during the altercation.

Byrd will be charged with murder because his pal Morales’ death occurred during the commission of a felony, according to the D.A.

Chester has some serious problems.

Maybe the biggest issue is kids and guns, and the fact that so many of them don’t think twice about using them, even when a police officer is involved.

They have a state of emergency in Chester. And no curfew is going to stop it. Not as long as kids have access to guns. And the mindset that they will use them in the blink of an eye.
