Maybe Ed Rendell just couldn’t resist.
The governor did something this week that had eluded him each of the previous seven years of his reign as boss of Pennsylvania.
He had managed to get a state budget through the Legislature and onto his desk, with a couple of hours to spare before the deadline.
He had missed that deadline all seven years he’s been in Harrisburg, including last summer’s debacle of a 101-day drought without a spending plan.
The problem now is that while the fiscal blueprint landed on Rendell’s desk Wednesday, it’s still sitting there.
His Edness is not happy. Oh, he’s got his spending plan, and his increase in education funding is pretty much intact, but he says he won’t sign off on the deal until several accompanying items are in place.
Now there’s a flap over authorization of an independent fiscal office.
Rendell has 10 days to sign the budget, and says he might use his line-item veto powers if needed.
Ah, Harrisburg. Even when they do something right, they can’t get it right.
