Not the Phillies year

This is not a panic move.

Having said that, I also can say this: The Phillies are not going back to the World Series this year. I don’t think they will defend their National League East crown either. At this point I’m not even sure they are capable of making a run at the wild card.

Last night they once again turned a win into a loss in one disastrous inning for Jamie Moyer, who has been one of their most dependable starters.

Maybe that’s part of the problem. When Jamie Moyer is your No. 2 starter, you have issues.

I love Moyer. I love the Phillies. This just is not their year.

They have been banged-up all year. Brad Lidge started the season on the DL. He was followed there by Jimmy Rollins. J.A. Happ still has not been seen since suffering an arm strain in the first few weeks of the season. He’s been banished to Lehigh Valley. Placido Polanco is on the shelf.
Now they face the prospect of playing until September without Chase Utley.

You’d like to think they will still be in contention when Utley returns.
Not if they keep playing like this.

After last night’s loss, which “deep-sixed” the team a full 6 games behind the Braves, even Charlie Manuel admitted the team has lost its edge.

Maybe they can get it back and rally after the All-Star break.

I’m not counting on it. They’ve had a great run. But this is not their year.
