Not the start the Phils wanted

If I told you that Ryan Howard kicked off the second half of the season by launching two balls out of Wrigley Field, you’d probably be all smiles.

Unfortunately, sandwiched in between those two Howard dingers were 12 straight runs put up by the Cubs.

Folks, your fightin’ Phils are in trouble.

The Phillies got smoked in their first game back from the All-Star break, and didn’t look especially good doing it.

Jamie Moyer looked every bit the 47-year-old journeyman, getting lit up in just three innings. He surrendered six runs on five hits and had the indignity of having a Cub steal home while he bounced an offering to the plate.

The Phils also looked sloppy in the field. Shane Victorino couldn’t catch up with a bullet over his head, then seemed to be in no great hurry to get the ball back into the infield while a speedy Cubs runner stretched it into a triple.

This was not what the Phils had in mind after they won four straight in dramatic fashion to end the first half.

There’s no rest for the weary. The Phils and Cubs have an afternoon date at Wrigley.

Joe Blanton gets the call for the Phils. The Phils need Blanton to come up big, setting up their big two, Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels, for the weekend.
