What can Brown do for you?
A lot, if you happen to be a Phillies fan.
Rookie phenom Domonic Brown proved all that and more in his sparkling debut in the Phillies lineup. On his first swing in the major leagues, the right-fielder smoked a ball off the top of the wall in right, driving in the Phils first run in what would be an easy, 7-1 win behind Roy Halladay.
After being greeted with a standing ovation as he stepped up to the plate for his first at-bat, Brown delivered the goods. He added a single later in the game, scored a run and drove in two.
In short, he’s got phenom written all over him, a five-tool guy that doesn’t come around very often.
The only splotch on his night was a play in the ninth that likely cost Halladay a shutout. Brown attempted a diving catch of a sinking liner with a man on first. He failed to come up with it, and it skipped behind him all the way to the wall, allowing the Diamondbacks to get on the board. The veteran play there would be to keep the ball in front of you.
Halladay got the next batter to fly out to end the ballgame, complete game – but not the shutout – intact.
Adding to the Phillies excitement today is word that they are very close to a deal for Astros’ ace Roy Oswalt.
In fact a Houston TV station is saying the deal is completed, needing only for Oswalt to sign off on it. He won’t come cheap. It likely will cost the Phils young pitcher J.A. Happ.
But it will give them a starting rotation headed by Halladay, Cole Hamels and then Oswalt.
Maybe the biggest question Charlie Manuel might have is what he will do with Brown when centerfielder Shane Victorino returns from the DL.
Suddenly Jayson Werth, who is now patrolling center with Brown in right, is red-hot at the plate. He had three more hits last night. And left-fielder Raul Ibanez is hitting over .300 since the All-Star break.
It’s a good problem to have.
For his part, Manuel liked what he saw from young Brown.
“I think they have a bobblehead coming out tomorrow,” the skipper joked.
Call it a Brown-out, only in this instance, the power is on.
The Domonic Brown era started with a bang. The Phils remain three and a half behind the Braves, and the trade deadline is Saturday afternoon.
Suddenly Eagles training camp is not such big news anymore. Kevin Kolb?
At least for now, he’ll take a back seat to the other new kid in town.
Right now, it’s Brown’s town.
