We have taken one more step on the path to becoming a multi-platform, multi-media entity.
In other words, we’re not just about print any more.
Last night we provided a live stream of the women’s title game from our annual Champs ‘N’ Charity softball tournament, which raises money for the American Cancer Society.
You can catch a re-broadcast of it here.
That’s right, we donned our best TV gear and provided those readers who could not make it out to Father Nall Field in Ridley (or who did not wish to dodge the raindrops that fell much of the night) with a live telecast from the game.
We’re planning to do the same tonight with the men’s title game from Marcus Hook, weather permitting. Of course, everyone knows that it never rains in the Hook!
We have now been doing this event for a quarter of a century. I was especially pleased to see that we have renamed the MVP Trophy for Greg Greenday, a longtime news and sports editor here at the Daily Times.
Greg was influential in getting the tourney off the ground 25 years ago, and actually served as director the first two years.
It’s ironic that he lost his life to the same dread disease we have been raising money to fight all these years.
Starting this year, the MVP of tourney will receive the Greg Greenday MVP Award.
Somewhere, Greg is shaking his head at all the technology we find ourselves swimming in these days in this crazy business.
And he’s undoubtedly smiling at the idea of the MVP trophy bearing his name.
Were he still around, he likely would have upbraided us for lavishing such an honor on such a workmanlike, unassuming guy.
I can’t think of anyone who deserves the honor more.
