The dog days of politics

The dog days of summer continue to churn for the candidates slugging it out in the bitter 7th District Congressional race.

Yesterday Republican Pat Meehan announced he would challenge the signatures that got third-party candidate James Schneller on the November ballot. No surprise there. You can get the details here.

In the meantime, there continues to be no word from Democrat Rep. Bryan Lentz concerning what role some of his supporters played in gathering those signatures.

We don’t think that’s a great idea. Here’s why.

It’s pretty clear what happened here. The common belief is that Schneller’s presence on the ballot helps Lentz and hurts Meehan.

There’s nothing technically wrong with what Democrats did, it just seems to run counter to Lentz’s squeaky-clean image.

He yelled long and loud earlier in this race when it was revealed there were some serious questions about signatures on Meehan’s petitions. Then he actually barged into a Meehan press conference in Harrisburg to dispute a claim that he was somehow tied into the “Bonusgate” probe in the state Capitol.

Now the shoe’s on the other foot.

Lentz is better than this. He should just tell what he knows about the incident and move on.
