Making some noise about the airport

Much has been written and said about Tinicum Township’s noisy neighbor.

That would be Philadelphia International Airport.

While the terminal is in the city of Philadelphia, may people are surprised to learn that much of the runways actually is located in Tinicum.

Not if you happen to live there.

For years they have put up with the noise. Then they learned that air routes were being redesigned, sending even more aircraft over their neighborhoods. Now they are hearing that the Federal Aviation Administration is signing off on an expansion plan that will further intrude on their space, and cost 72 people their homes.

But I have yet to hear a better explanation of the situation than the one offered last night by a resident at a community workshop at which airport officials updated residents on what they were doing to alleviate noise problems.

“The airport’s here, it makes a lot of noise, and we have to live with it,” is the way one resident summed it up.

Quite nicely, I might add.
