Phils fiddle while Braves burn

Slowly but surely, the Phillies are bearing down on the Atlanta Braves.

No thanks to Kyle Kendrick.

Mr. Inconsistency was on display again this weekend. Kendrick was the Phils’ starter on Sunday, and as usual had them looking up before they had a chance to come up to bat. Kendrick gave up three runs in the first inning and the Phils never recovered.

Yesterday, the Phils’ bats must not have been notified that they were actually playing a day-night double-header. They never showed up for the afternoon game.

The Phils managed all of three hits. They got one-hit over six innings by someone named Adalberto Mendez.

The Phills’ slumbering offense finally showed up in time for the nightcap, posting a 7-4 victory to make Roy Oswalt 5-1 since he arrived.

The split allowed the Phils to shave another half-game off the Brraves’
lead. Atlanta was busy losing to the Pirates.

With a little more consistent effort, the Phils could be sitting in first place this morning.

Instead, they remain wildly inconsistent.

And a half game back.
