The Phils have their own 'Big O'

Phillies fans might be tempted to have dreams of a former legendary NBA player dancing in their heads.

That’s because it looks like the Phils’ may have their very own “Big O.”

That would be Roy Oswalt, who was gangbusters (actually Dodger-busters) yesterday afternoon in silencing the Dodgers and leading the Phils to a 5-1 win. It allowed the Phils to stay just three games back of the Braves in the National League East, and two games up on the Giants in the wild-card race. They also both won.

Oswalt has a bit of a reputation as a “Mr. September” type, at his best when the games mean the most. He looked every bit of it yesterday.

Oswalt pitched one-hit ball into the seventh inning. He makes up one-third of one of the most impressive starting troikas in baseball, along with Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels.

That was not the only good news for the Phils in L.A. Chase Utley’s bat also showed up. The second baseman has been struggling mightily since coming back early from that sprained thumb. But he banged out three doubles to lead the Phils attack.

The Phils make a quick stop in Denver tonight for a one-game makeup and then head back home for the weekend.

Roy Oswalt may not be a giant robot, but shouting "SHOWTIME!" still applies.
