The return of Ryan's hope

Team inconsistent showed up again last night. And in this case that’s a good thing.

One night after their bats failed to make the trip up I-5 to L.A. from San Diego, the Phillies made up for it by laying the lumber on the Dodgers in an 8-4 win.

Ryan Howard led the charge for the Phils, breaking his homerless streak with a titanic shot to centerfield. It was one of two 3-run homers the Phils spanked, one night after they managed all of one hit and got no-hit for seven innings and change by Hiroki Kuroda.

The eight runs on nine hits the Phils posted made a winner out of Kyle Kendrick, but it didn’t do them any good in the standings. At least it prevented them from falling any farther behind.

Both the Braves and the Giants won, so the Phils remain three back of Atlanta in the National League East, and continue to hold a game and a half lead on San Fran in the NL wild-card race.

Perhaps Charlie Manuel put it best, in his simple, down-home manner.

“Three-run homers are nice,” the Phils’ skipper said. “It’s a good weapon. We haven’t done that in a while.”

The big question is what they will do this afternoon, when they hook up with the Dodgers again in an afternoon game at Chavez Ravine.

Howard had gone 13 games without a homer, dating back to July 27. He also missed 16 games in August with an ankle sprain.

This team has gotten used to the big guy putting the team on his broad back and carrying them to the playoffs.

It’s Sept. 1. Welcome back, Mr. Howard.
