This is not off the record

Pat Meehan was scheduled to sit down last night with a group of Tea Party activists from southeastern Pennsylvania.

The Republican running for the 7th District Congressional seat was to be joined by fellow Republicans Tom Corbett, who wants to be governor, and a couple of other congressional candidates, Mike Fitzpatrick and Dee Adcock.

There was only one problem. The event in Montgomeryville, which was being deemed by tea party groups such as the Valley Forge Patriots as a “frank discussion between the Tea Party Coalition and those candidates who seek our votes for public service” was not open to the public.

In fact the group had designated the entire session as being off the record.

That’s not a good idea. We don’t particularly care for the notion of politicians dicussing where they stand on issues behind closed doors.

As it turns out, Meehan did not attend. He said he had a previous engagement.

Good for him.

We’re just about eight weeks away from the election. Now is not the time for closed-door meetings.

We’ll take Meehan at his word that he had a previous date that precluded him from attending.

It was the right call.

We have no beef with the Tea Party groups. We do have problems with “off the record” meetings.
