Call Sestak 'The Comeback Kid'

That little admission from Bryan Lentz was not the only big political news yesterday.

The Comeback Kid is coming back again.

Two new polls now show Democrat Joe Sestak now with a stunning slight lead over Republican Pat Toomey. This is a huge turnaround, since just a month or so ago several polls had the Republican with a 10-point bulge. That’s now gone.

Consider this race a tossup.

First there was a survey from Public Policy Poll showing Sestak with just a sliver of an edge in the race, at 46-45. Counting in the margin of error and it’s a race that could go either way.

But then later yesterday The Morning Call/Muhlenberg College Tracker Poll showed Sestak now leading Toomey 44-41 percent.

And once again it seems Sestak has turned to the magic of a devastating TV ad to help turn the tide.

Remember back in his uphill fight against longtime incumbent Arlen Specter in the Democratic primary, Sestak unfurled one of the most killer ads in recent memory. The vision of Specter saying his vote-switch would allow him to get “re-elected” with Specter emphasizing that last word, proved fatal to the newly minted Dem.

Now Sestak is back with an ad portraying Toomey as saying his voting record when he was in Congress “is hard to distinguish from Rick Santorum’s.”

Ouch!

This race now comes down to two basic elements: The undecided vote and turnout on election day. Sestak needs a big turnout to help him push over the top.

And claim once again the title of Comeback Kid. Now if only he could tell the Phillies how to do the same.
