Just call him the Yankee killer.
Of course, Phillies fans might call him something else. They’re still calling him the one who got away.
Cliff Lee was up to his old playoff magic last night. And once again, his victim was the vaunted New York Yankees.
Picking up right where he left off with the Phils in dominating the Yankees in last year’s World Series, Lee bleway away the pinstrikes in the Big Apple last night. Granted, the Phils were not successful in defending their World Series crown vs. the Yanks. That wasn’t Lee’s fault. He won the only two games the Phils took in the Series.
Last night he was on the hill for the Rangers, and it was as if nothing had changed.
Lee dazzled the Yankees, striking out 13 in throwing eight hitless innings.
Yes, Lee certainly would look good in a rotation that now includes Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels. If the Phils throw Joe Blanton in Game 4 tomorrow, and he does not fare well, look for the fans to bemoan the fact that Lee is not still in red pinstripes.
Ruben Amaro Jr. had to jettison Lee in the off-season, at least in part to make room for Halladay, and also to get some prospects to restock the Phils’ farm teams.
Here’s a tantalizing prospect.
How does Lee vs. Halladay in the World Series sound to you.
How about a winner-take-all Game 7.
Should Lee prevail, Amaro would never hear the end of it.
