Andy Reid was poking some fun at himself at his Monday day-after press conference. The Eagles head coach referred to himself as the “chubby”
coach of an NFL team with two very good quarterbacks.
The truth is, when it comes to the QB position, Reid is in Fat City.
That might not necessarily be a good thing.
Reid indicated Monday that Kevin Kolb likely would be the starter again on Sunday when the Birds got to Tennessee. That is probably because Michael Vick’s banged-up ribs are still not completely healed.
But you could just as easily say it is on merit.
Kolb, who lost his job after he suffered a concussion in less than a half of action on opening day against the Packers, is back with a vengeance.
He posted his second straight win as the starter filling in for Vick on Sunday.
Kolb didn’t just win. He was lights out. This is the guy we were promised all off-season. Kolb ran the West Coast offense to perfection.
So now the question is what happens when Vick is completely healthy.
Reid maintains that Vick will be the starter.
I would remind anyone who believes that statement that the coach said the same thing about Kolb before pulling the rug out from under him and inserting Vick as his starter.
If Kolb is on the money again Sunday against the Titans, the Eagles then have their bye week. Plenty of time for a quarterback controversy to foment. Especially if Vick makes it clear he wants to be the man.
Maybe then Reid might not be quite as “jolly.”
In the meantime, the Birds are 4-2 and own a share of the best record in the NFC.
And all this with both Kolb and Vick taking turns at the helm.
For the Birds? Hey, if it is, I’ll take it.
