It is one of those stupid things that boys do.
Only today it is a felony.
I refer to the story from Delaware, in which a 14-year-old boy decided to play tough guy with a couple of smaller boys.
This guy confronted a couple of kids, ages 7 and 8, in what no doubt will be pawned off as the latest case of bullying taken to the extreme.
I’m not so sure.
Make no mistake. What this teen did absolutely was abhorrent. Police say that he threatened the kids and told them that he would mess up their bikes if they did not comply with his wishes.
And what did he want them to do? This rocket scientist demanded they get inside a nearby Porta-Potty. If you’ve never been inside one, let me give you a hint. They are invariably the most vile, smelly, awful things you can imagine. Such are the means we will go to in order to relieve ourselves.
But this little brute had other, more nefarious things in mind. After forcing one of the smaller kids into the portable toilet, he thought it would be a riot to tip it over. He did, but in the process it fell with the door facing down, in effect trapping the smaller boy inside. He ended up covered in waste. His friends eventually managed to lift it and allow him to scramble to freedom.
Now the older boy has been charged with a felony, unlawful imprisonment, assault and harassment.
I don’t like what this kid did for a minute. I wonder about what kind of home he grew up in where he considered this to be fun.
This really wasn’t some kind of a prank. I have actually witnessed some “boys” do some rather bizarre things involving portae-potties. But those are stories for a different time.
This is different. This is a big kid looking to take advantage of some littler kids.
In other words, a classic bully.
I just don’t know that it warrants a felony charge.
But in today’s climate, with stories of bullying and cyber-bullying ending in tragedy, the days of practical jokes are obviously behind us.
Here’s an idea. Nix the felony charge. Take this 14-year-old and put him in a Porta-Potty for an hour or two.
That should cure him of this dumb idea.
