A new battle for Harrah's

There is a shadow sitting over the latest revenue numbers released by Harrah’s Chester Casino.

The latest numbers released this week by the state Gaming Control Board show that Harrah’s continues to see the good times roll – although at a lesser rate than the year before.

It’s something of a trend at the Chester casino, where revenue from slots has been down for the better part of a year.

Harrah’s took in $23,198,229 in September. That’s down from $23,685,222 the same month the year before.

Of course, you have to remember that this year gamblers also have the ability to play table games, which appear to be going great guns at Harrah’s and the other nine casinos up and operating.

Statewide, revenue was up 7.8 percent, but that is in part simply because there are now more casinos operating.

And therein lies what might be an even bigger challenge for Harrah’s. In fact, it sits just a few miles north on I-95.

Already used to dealing with the potential lure of gamblers south on I-95 at Delaware Park, Harrah’s now has still another competitor in the opposite direction.

SugarHouse Casino is now up and running on the Philadelphia waterfront. In its first week of operations, state regulators indicate the Philly casino raked in $4.7 million.

No doubt that includes some money that used to be dumped into the slots at Harrah’s.

Keep and eye on this one. Just don’t bet the house on it.
