Time (management issue) is yours, Andy

Forget Donovan McNabb. And Michael Vick.

And Kevin Kolb. Especially Kevin Kolb.

The Eagles are going nowhere with this coaching staff. That includes Andy “I Goofed” Reid, who managed to once again end the first half of yesterday’s key contest against the Redskins by botching an important time-management issue.

How many times do we have to see this scenario play out? You could probably run out of fingers and toes before you’d stop counting the games where Reid had the same issue at the end of the first half.

Yesterday, with Kevin Kolb driving the Eagles to a touchdown that would put the Eagles right back into the game and, maybe more importantly, switch the momentum to the Birds, Reid again suffered one of those time-management issues that defy belief.

On third down running back LeSean McCoy drove toward the end zone, but pretty clearly came up short. Fourth and goal from about a foot or so.
The officials got word that the play would be reviewed by the booth.

After what seemed like an eternity, Reid used a timeout.

After all this, the Eagles apparently were surprised at the placement of the ball. This so flummoxed them that they were unable to get a play off in time.

A delay of game penalty took the decision out of Reid’s hands and meant the Birds had to kick a field goal.

After the game, as you might expect, everyone zeroed in on that crucial series to end the first half. Reid fell on his sword, saying it was his fault and that, simply, “I goofed.”

Again.

Then he managed to keep a straight face by declaring, “I have to do a better job there. No excuses.”

Honestly, that’s what he said.

This is no longer a pattern. It’s almost every game, where Reid manages to botch critical time management issues.

If that was not enough, there were several other areas he might want to do a “better job” with.

For some reason, in a game key NFC East game that had been hyped since the schedule game out for the return of Donovan McNabb, the Eagles came out flatter than a week-old beer.

Sean McDermott’s defense in particular looked unprepared and unready for the first two series, which saw the Redskins basically run the ball down their throat.

As for the great McNabb reunion, it was pretty much a non-issue. You can check my print column for my feelings on McNabb and Eagles fans.

He got the last laugh, for some reason deciding to rub it in the Eagles faces after the game, saying “everyone makes mistakes and they (the
Eagles) made one last year.”

It was typical McNabb, who never in 11 years managed to get past the fact that his selection – his selection, not him personally – got booed on Draft Day. His reaction after the game probably says more about McNabb than al the hype that built up to the game.

McNabb is no longer the Eagles’ problem.

Michael Vick and Kevin Kolb are. Vick is injured, suffering rib problems when he got sandwiched as he approached the goal line on an electrifying run that was nullified by a penalty regardless.

Kolb is for some reason now playing timidly, looking decidedly gunshy after suffering a concussion in Game 1. But more than that, even going back to the preseason, Kolb has given no indication of being the same guy who threw for consecutive 300-yard games last year.

But the truth is, even those two are now the Eagles biggest problems.

Andy Reid is.

Time’s yours, Andy.

So are the time-management issues. Just as they always are.
