You can't fight City Hall

So who says you can’t fight City Hall?

Well, you might try the good folks in Marple and Eddystone.

In both towns, residents were up in arms over proposals for new businesses coming to their lovely burgs.

And in both instances they watched as development rolled right over them.

They made their voices heard. They protested. They even screamed and shouted in some instances. All to no avail.

There is going to be a new Wal-Mart in the Marple Crossroads Shopping Center.

And what used to be Camden Iron’s shredding facility in Southwest Philly will soon be calling the old Foamex plant site in Eddystone home.

Anyone who has attempted to try to get into the Marple Crossroads Shopping Center around Christmas time can only imagine what that task will be like once the behemoth Wal-Mart drops anchor in the center.

And it’s hard to argue with the environmental and quality of life concerns raised by opponents to the metal-shredding plant in Eddystone.

At the same time, it’s also tough to argue with the decisions made by borough council in Eddystone and commissioners in Marple. The truth is in both instances the zoning laws were in favor of the developments.

There also is the not-small matter of revenue and jobs both developments will bring into these towns.

I guess that’s why elected officials get paid the big bucks?

Oh, they don’t?

Then why do people want to subject themselves to such aggravation? Usually because they have a real concern for the towns they live in.

That doesn’t make the job any easier.

I know exactly how they feel. Every day I know I am going to make a lot of people very angry.

Just like they did in voting to approve those two plans.
