They're off! Live election day 2010 blogging

5:30 a.m.:
And they're off!

Uh, not exactly. The polls don't open for another hour and a half.

That won't stop Joe Sestak. The Democrat who is giving up the 7th District seat in Congress to run for the U.S. Senate will likely be the first person in line at the polling place at the Edgmont Township Municipal Building on Gradyville Road. Actually, he probably won't be the first to vote. Sestak plans to show up at 6:30 a.m. to greet voters.

He'll have his work cut out for him. The final polls released Monday have him trailing Republican Pat Toomey. The Quinnipiac poll put it at 50-45 percent for Toomey among likely voters in Pennsylvania. The Muhlenberg College poll also showed a slight edge for Toomey, at 48-44 percent.

I'm not betting against Sestak. I've been burned too many times before. I didn't think he had much of a shot against Curt Weldon four years ago. We know how that one turned out, thanks in part to that raid by the feds on the offices of some of Weldon's pals, a raid by the way that has yet to produce any charges.

I flat-out thought Sestak was going to get crushed by longtime Sen. Arlen Specter in the Democratic primary. Specter had just switched to the Democratic Party. And Sestak started far behind. But he closed like Secretariat and - fueled by a devastating TV ad - dumped the longtime incumbent.

I think it's going to be a long day - and night.

Buckle your seat belt. I'll be blogging all day long as we head into a live-stream of election results tonight as we report live from both the Bryan Lentz/Democratic HQ in Upper Darby, and Meehan/GOP camp at the Springfield Country Club.
