The leader of the (Eagles) pack

In case you haven’t noticed, something very interesting is happening with the Philadelphia Eagles.

I’m not talking about the so-called spat between Andy Reid and DeSean Jackson. Hey, they lost. People aren’t supposed to be happy.

I’m not talking about the status of key cornerback Asante Samuel, whose absence was glaring as no less than Jay Cutler carved up the Thanksgiving Birds in Sunday’s loss.

I’m talking about the fact that this team has an unquestioned new leader. And he just happens to play quarterback.

His name is Michael Vick.

Vick is the guy you see on the sidelines talking to teammates, stroking when necessary, reassuring teammates things will be OK at times, and kicking his buds in the butt when he deems it necessary.

It was Vick who stepped into the breech after Sunday’s ugly loss and eased what could have been a problem when Coach Andy Reid aired out the team and apparently lobbed some pointed remarks in the direction of his superstar-in-the-making young wide receiver Jackson.

It’s another sign of just how far Vick has come on the road back from spending two years in prison for his role in running a horrendous dog-fighting operation.

It’s a sign of something else as well. It’s a sign that the QB’s position, always a high-profile position in the pressure-packed world of the NFL, is once again home of the unquestioned leader of this Birds’ nest.

That hasn’t been the case for a long time.

It’s another reason Vick has proved a refreshing change.
