Getting down to work in Harrisburg

That legislating business out there in Harrisburg must be tough work.

Yesterday the newest members of the Legislature were sworn in, then as their first order of business decided to take another two weeks off.

Among those taking their seats were two new members of the Delco delegation. Republican Joe Hackett took the oath, putting the 161st District seat back in the GOP’s hands after two terms of Bryan Lentz.
And Margo Davidson, just the third person to hold the 164th District seat, becomes the first woman and first African-American to represent the Upper Darby District. She succeeds Mario Civera, who held the seat for three decades.

In the meantime, a $4 billion deficit awaits them when they finally get down to work.

Hackett admitted that’s No. 1 on the docket. Davidson said she was “humbled” by the trappings of the state House.

They’ll both be back on Jan. 24, when the first real working session of the Legislature gets underway.

The one thing our elected representatives did do yesterday, aside from nominating their respective leaders, was take a vote to restore integrity to the chamber, along with a vow from the leaders to seek a civil discourse.

Yeah, sure. That $4 billion deficit, and the tough decisions on how to deal with it, likely will play havoc with that “civility” thing.

Hey, at least they have two weeks to think it over.

Nice work if you can get it.
