Tough times at the Ac-a-me

To my father, a true-blooded Philadelphia native, Acme was always a three-syllable word.

Ac-a-me.

To some of its workers, the venerable grocery store chain today might be a four-letter word.

That’s because a lot of them might be out of work soon. Acme Markets announced they would close five stores in the area they say are unprofitable. One of them is in Wayne; another is in Limerick. The others are in New Jersey.

No word on what is going to become of all those jobs.

Acme has been getting handed its lunch by competition from those swanky new Wegmans stores, in Collegeville and Cherry Hill. There’s also the intrusion of big box store such as Target and Wal-Mart into the grocery racket.

It’s not a good time to be a business icon in Philadelphia.

Yesterday it was Tastykake, saying it would likely seek a merger or possible sale of the company because expected savings didn’t appear.

We all know nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a TastyKake. But for how long?

Today it’s Acme Markets.

Good thing my father was an A&P man. Oh, I forgot, they’re in bankruptcy.

Yep, it’s safe to say this economy is not out of the woods just yet.

Where have you gone, Horn & Hardart?
