You have to admire Jameer Nelson. He’s never forgotten where he came from.
I had the opportunity to talk to the former All-Delco and Chester High star last spring when he was the guest speaker at our annual All-Delco banquet. The guy is now a legitimate NBA superstar, but he politely talked to every person who approached our table, posed for photographs and signed autographs.
He didn’t even wince when a number of older women approached and said they remembered him when he was just a kid.
Chester remains very much a part of Jameer Nelson’s life.
So does his college alma mater, Saint Joseph’s. It was with Nelson at the helm that the Hawks sprinted to the No. 1 ranking in college basketball, and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Things are not going so well for Phil Martelli and the Hawks these days.
Nelson has not forgotten.
Columnist Jack McCaffery had a chance to chat with Nelson last night before he helped the Magic beat the Sixers down at the Wells Fargo Center.
Martelli is taking some heat from the fans, and in particular anonymous online posters.
Nelson came to his old coach’s defense.
He has not forgotten what Martelli did for a kid from Chester.
Pretty much tells you everything you need to know about what kind of person Nelson is.
