Juan for the history books

Andy Reid is going to tell us this was the plan the whole time.

Just like Donovan McNabb was his quarterback. Right up until the time the Eagles shipped him off to Washington.

And then Kevin Kolb was his starting quarterback. Right up until the time he pulled the rug out from under him and installed Michael Vick as his starting QB.

Yesterday Reid stunned just about everyone by naming longtime assistant Juan Castillo as his defensive coordinator.

You read it right. Castillo has spent 16 years with the Eagles, all on the offensive side of the ball. Castillo played defense in college, however. And he coached it a little bit back at Kingsville College in Texas. No doubt that will instill fear in offenses around the NFL.

Even Reid allowed that some would likely question his choice, admitting that some might find it “strange.”

This is the reason they dumped Sean McDermott a couple of weeks ago?
This is why they have been interviewing more experienced guys all week.

Reid says Castillo was the guy all along.

I agree with him. It’s just strange.

The only explanation for this move is that they were surprised when they got turned down by a couple of their first choices after the McDermott firing.

Now you have to wonder if Reid, Banner and Lurie regreat the move to ax the young McDermott, who was mentored by the legendary Jim Johnson. Now they’re installing a guy who has touched a defensive game plan since his college days.

Maybe Reid’s latest head-scratcher turns out to be a bit of genius. He certainly has a pedigree for turning out strong assistant coaches, at least on the defensive side of the ball. The problem with that is most of those guys worked under Johnson. So did McDermott, and look where that got him.

If the Eagles flounder next year, especially on defense, look for more eyebrows to be raised at this puzzling move.

In terms of the Eagles coaching carousel, this is Juan for the history book.
